Obituary of Jack Walter Stephens

Jack Walter Stephens was born June 8, 1932 and died May 31, 2023.

Jack was born in Grygla, Minnesota, third child to his parents Walter Stephens and Emma Sollid Stephens.

Jack left school at the age of 13 to work and support his family afer the death of his father. Years later he returned to Toppenish High School in Washington graduaing in 1952. He married Jolene McAfee of Ferndale, WA on September 16, 1956.

Jack had many jobs during his working days including delivery boy, truck driver, poultry processing plant manager, and Newberg School District facilites manager. He also worked as a part time custodian for the First United Methodist Church in Newberg, where he was also a member and eventually an Elder.

Jack served on the Safety Committee for the City of Newberg. He was an all-around “Jack” of all trades; fixing just about anything broken. For many years Jack and Jolene were avid square-dancers, RV travelers, camping and hunting enthusiasts. Jack was also known to enjoy water-skiing and snow-skiing.

Survivors are his wife Jolene and his children Michael Stephens, Marilyn Mayfield, Karen Saunders, and Melinda Stephens. Also surviving are his grandchildren Alaina Mayfield, Andrew Stephens, Colton Saunders, Georgia Mayfield, Corbin Stephens, Landry Saunders, Erin Stephens, and Remy Saunders. Jack is survived by his siblings Doris Anderson, Joe Stephens, Cheryl Steinmetz, Janice Heinl, and Jeannie Jewitt. Being one of nine children, Jack had many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Audrey Parrish, Betty Croy, and John Stephens.

Jack’s Celebration of Life was on Friday, June 9, 2023 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church of Newberg, 1205 Deborah Rd, Newberg, OR 97132. Presiding over the service is former Pastor, Tom Tate.

Crown Memorial of Tualatin was chosen to handle Jack’s end of life arrangements.
