Obituary of Dawn Jean Carrell
Dawn Jean Carrell
August 19, 1935 – October 21, 2023
Dawn Jean Carrell, age 88, of Oregon City, passed away peacefully and pain-free Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, in a loving foster care home.
Dawn was a popular resident of the upper Holcomb Park Place neighborhood of Oregon City, where neighbors remember her fondly as an inveterate walker, talker, friend and, often, neighborhood watcher extraordinaire.
She was born August 19, 1935, in Portland, Ore., as Dawn Jean Peterson and attended high school at Franklin High School in Portland. Dawn was just 17 before her birthday in 1953, so waited until she graduated in 1953 to marry Charles “Chuck” Carrell in Portland on August 23 (at the age of 18).
The couple moved to Oregon city and raised three daughters. The marriage lasted 68 years before Chuck’s passing.
Dawn worked part-time as a housekeeper, cleaning businesses and homes, but ultimately found her passion in raising her family. In addition to caring for her neighbors, she was a 4-H mom (horses, sheep and dogs) and lover of everything dahlias, where she spent many hours taking care of them in her beloved garden.
“She was the best grandma anyone could have,” said her granddaughter, Tasha. Rick her son-in-law said that "The one thing that made her special was her willingness to take in family members if they needed a place to land.” In fact, as a great friend to all, she was someone who always looked on the bright side and was willing to help others, her dream was for her family to be united.
Some of her hobbies included gardening (of course), walking all over Oregon City and in her neighborhood, keeping herself fit at CURVES, having tea with the ladies from her Red Hat Club, and baking for people she loved.
Dawn was preceded in death by her husband, Charles and, a week before her passing, by daughter, Cindi Carrell of Benton City, Wash.
She’s survived by daughters, Mikki Proffitt and Sandi Franklin; grandchildren, Jacob, Autumn, Tasha and Kendra; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Joe (Peterson) Bunton; sister-in-law Mildred Jamison; and brother-in-law, Don Carrell.
A memorial ceremony open to the public will be held by the family Nov. 25, 2023, from 1 – 4 pm at SAH-HAH-LEE Golf Course at 17104 SE 130th Ave, Clackamas, Ore., 97015.
